December magazine issue

Jane Goodall first visited what would later become Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in 1960. She made historic discoveries about chimpanzees that changed how the scientific community considered non-human animals’ sentience and intelligence. After seeing how human population growth was ravaging the area around Gombe, she turned to advocacy to lift people out of poverty, protect wildlife, and preserve the environment. She has always been outspoken about the importance of addressing population pressures through voluntary means. In this issue, we share excerpts from her new book, The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times.

Glaring Emissions: Linking Rapid Population Growth and Climate Change

Presentation with Population Connection President and CEO, John Seager

Date: Wednesday, February 23rd
Time: 2pm ET/11am PT

Climate change is humanity’s most challenging issue—and the risks only continue to grow. By burning fossil fuels and deforesting vast areas, humans have increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to levels unprecedented in at least 800,000 years. As a result, the earth’s average temperature is rising, endangering food security, the availability of freshwater, and human health. As we near a global population of 8 billion people, it’s critical we look at demographic trends to address and mitigate climate impacts.

Our only hope is to slow, and ultimately cease, the astronomical growth of the human population, to allow the earth to heal and support a smaller, stable population. I was thankful to find your organization as a conduit to contribute toward a better tomorrow, even though it is one that I will never see. Donna J. Warlick, Population Connection Member
