The African Education Program (AEP) works to unlock the potential of Zambia’s youth and adults by building and growing community-led organizations.
Zambia has one of the world’s fastest growing and youngest populations with 68% of Zambians under the age of 25. AEP helps young people fulfill their potential by providing a safe learning center and delivering programs on quality and inclusive education, health and wellbeing, entrepreneurship and financial literacy, the arts and creativity, and leadership development, and grassroots climate solutions.
Over 1,200 children, youth and women and young men attend AEP’s flagship Learning & Leadership Center that is located in a peri-urban community in Kafue, Zambia, coming before and after school for holistic program support. Over 4,000 youth are also reached through a peer-to-peer education program in local schools with information on reproductive health, HIV and drug abuse prevention, gender equity, and leadership development. Additionally, 41 children receive individualized learning plans in the Read for Rose Special Education Program that include acquiring life-changing language, academic, and occupational skills.
AEP’s Reproductive Health Access Initiative focuses on a multitude of factors that prevent girls and women from dreaming big and achieving their full potential, including reproductive and menstrual health, pregnancy prevention, ending HIV stigma, emotional health, self-esteem building, and gender-based violence. Thanks to these comprehensive programs, the pregnancy rate among the young women at AEP’s Learning & Leadership Center is less than 2% compared to 16% locally and 28% nationally. Girls and young women at the Center receive either reusable menstrual products—made locally by mothers and women in the community who are trained through a Center-led initiative—or are given options that best fit them, like menstrual cups and period panties, helping ensure that they never miss school activities at the Center because of menstruation. The local team and youth also created My Period, Our Story, an inclusive menstrual health and hygiene storybook tailored to the needs of young Zambians and available in print, audiovisual, and braille formats.
