Panel Discussion for UN’s CPD58

What’s the story with family planning? How women’s empowerment, reproductive freedom, and storytelling build healthier, more sustainable communities

We participated in the 58th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development by hosting an official virtual side event with Population Media Center and Women for Conservation! We were joined by three compelling storytellers and population stabilization advocates for a 90-minute panel discussion.

Reproductive health and rights and bodily autonomy are key to advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, Good Health and Well-being. During the panel, speakers showcased how their organizations’ work helps remove barriers to family planning and empowers women and girls. This leads to healthier, more prosperous communities. Improving access to reproductive health care also brings the added benefit of slowing population growth, allowing for more sustainable natural resource management, conservation of vital ecosystems, and greater climate change resilience.

Presentation with John Seager

Deadly Silence: Ignoring Overpopulation Risks the Future of Our Living Planet

As our global population continues to grow, so do the pressures on our environment, natural resources, and climate. Yet, discussions about overpopulation still remain largely absent from mainstream sustainability conversations.

Join us for a discussion with Population Connection President and CEO John Seager, who will present the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to stabilize global population growth. During his presentation, John will highlight rights-based solutions such as improving access to family planning, providing quality education for all, and promoting sustainable economies to shape a more balanced future for people and the planet.

A core part of our mission is informing the public about population trends, reproductive health, and environmental sustainability. As we navigate a new administration, the need for accurate information is more important than ever—especially in a media landscape saturated with persistent misconceptions about population issues and pronatalist messaging.

Quarterly Magazine

Population Connection magazine is our quarterly publication, distributed to our network of 40,000 supporters, every member of Congress, and about 3,000 public and university libraries.

In the wake of the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, rates of sterilization among both men and women have increased, and wait lists for vasectomy consultations have grown to six months in some places. Read about some of the people behind the rising prevalence of people seeking permanent contraception in our March issue.
